Anxiety Disorders

I read an article recently that made the claim that we all know what anxiety feels like. I’m not sure that that is  true as far as knowing what is happening  when an anxiety attack occurs, either the first time or after several episodes. We may feel our heart pounding. We may lose concentration, and may feel queasiness , nervousness, and slight shaking symptoms. But we may not understand what is happening. But if there is significant interference in your everyday routines and you cannot live the way you want or expect to live, you may have an anxiety disorder.  There are self-help  remedies and many treatment alternatives. So there can be light at the end of what may appear to be a long, dark tunnel. You can find the ways to gain control over your daily activities without panic or flight.

Some level of concern or tension, and even being frightened is normal and such feelings and thoughts can help focus our attention if there is some genuine albeit small threat to our comfort. So anxiety will not always be labeled a bad thing, but when fear or anxiety prevents us from pursuing solutions to problems, disrupts relationships, or prevents us from continuing to enjoy activities that have previously been important to us, then we may have entered the territory of Anxiety Disorder.

So what should we look for:

Should you experience some of the symptoms listed, and they are persistent you may want to get some profession advice.

Do you feel like danger and catastrophe are around every corner?

  • Has fear or anxiety been the cause of disruption in your normal work or school activities, or family relationships?
  • Is there constant tension and/or “edginess?”
  • Are you thinking or imagining danger as a constant threat?
  • Are your feelings irrational ones, with no basis in what is really happening?
  • Do you repeat actions that seem to you to insure good outcomes?
  • Have you been avoiding common place situations or activities to beat feelings of worry?
  • Have you experienced attacks of panic where your heart pounds without warning?
  • Do you feel like danger and catastrophe are around every corner?
  • Anxiety disorders can also affect suffers with depression too. Both anxiety and depression may arise from the same causes, so that can be why they can be present at the same time often feeding off of each other. So consider seeking help for both conditions.

When to Say When

Sometimes you gotta decide is your health more important than the taste  sensations of carefully crafted cuisine.

The time has come for me. I do love McDonalds Biscuit Sandwiches and assorted fast foods. I could eat fries by the bucket full and who can resist a double even when a single would be satisfying.  Well we can resist when the time is right. Start using your brain the way it was intended to be used.

It is for making intelligent choices and by choosing well you become wise. Make this your time. Control. Its a personal thing. You make the decisions that can affect your health and fitness as well as your happiness.  Cut down on how much you eat when you are taking on board more than your body needs.

Substitute good foods for bad. Maybe eat small amounts on a timely basis. I found that adequate breakfasts including McDonalds Sausage Biscuits or ask for the biscuit with just folded egg, (each currently priced at $1.00) varied with cereal, yogurt, fruit, even bacon and eggs can set me up for the day.

Then about 3 hours later I have a banana, an apple or a pear. A few hours later lunch maybe some ham, a boiled egg and some crackers; more fruit in the afternoon and a salad when I get home. Maybe you could try dome almonds as a snack during the day. Start now and reward yourself after a week or so with some of your favorite foods but take it easy and good luck.

Fast Food is Fat Food

Many people come to me asking how they can manage their weight. They’re always hoping for some kind of prescription for some weight loss drug or appetite suppressant. What I usually tell them to do is to stop eating out so much. These people claim to want to lose weight but can’t say no Burger King. I am not up-to-date on any major statistics but I would but Americans are overweight due to fast food. So if you are someone who loves-themselves-some Wendys, I would wager that you could lose ten pounds or more by swearing off fast food for just one month. Here’s why:

Eliminating soda is one of the top reasons you’ll lose weight. Soda is concentrated empty calories in liquid form! You may read the nutrition label and see that soda has no fat, but in reality, all the sugar it contains will be converted into fat later. If you want to get rid of fat, you can’t order a tall cup of Dr. Pepper every day. It’s just not going to work. By cutting soda, your body will be so much more likely to burn all of the calories it takes in.

Not eating out will help you lose weight because you’ll be able to gain more portion control over what you eat. When we eat fast food, we usually order a combo meal and we don’t feel like we’ve gotten the most bang for our buck until every bite is consumed, every drop of soda is slurped down, and ever fry is devoured. Because of this, many of us keep eating even though we’re full when eating out. This is the kiss of death when trying to lose weight. You can’t keep eating once your tummy says, “no more.”

The last reason you’ll lose weight is because you won’t be eating fries. While the burgers have their fair share of fat and calories, the fries absolutely wreak havoc if you want to lose weight. Fried foods are hard to digest and are almost impossible to burn off. Sadly, most dishes at a fast food joint come with something battered in oil. By avoiding the restaurants altogether, you can eliminate fried foods from your diet so you can better manage your caloric intake.

One of my friends in particular swore off fast food late last year. Within a couple of months, he had lost almost 30 pounds! So if you’re addicted to McDonalds and Carls JR but craving to be thin, it’s time to break the dependence and start eating at home.
